John Bacon, Jr.

    John Bacon, Jr. studied composition at the State University of New York at Buffalo and independently in Buffalo and New York City. Bacon’s jazz compositions and arrangements have been performed by The New Jazz Orchestra of Buffalo, Roswell Rudd and the Flexible Flyers, Wendell Rivera and the Latin Jazz All-Stars, trumpeter Lester Bowie, violinist Leroy Jenkins and Multi-Jazz Dimensions. He has composed music for film and dance, improvisational pieces and arrangements of folk and jazz songs for the Maelström Percussion Ensemble.


As a member of the Composers Alliance of Buffalo, he has directed improvisational pieces for mixed ensembles of high school students. He has been commissioned by the Just Buffalo Literary Center, Williamsville North Percussion Ensemble and the Fairport High School Jazz Ensembles. In 1991 he was the recipient of an Erie County Initiative Program Award in composition.


Bacon was featured as a soloist performing original compositions and improvisations at the North American New Music Festival in 1992 and at Hallwalls Contemporary Art Center in 1995. He has produced a multi-media video, entitled Percussion In Space, that features solo percussion improvisations, a compact disc of solo percussion music entitled Drumspeak and two recordings of original jazz with Multi-Jazz Dimensions.

    John Bacon, Jr. has performed Jazz and New Music throughout the US, Canada and in Europe. With trombonist Roswell Rudd, he performed at Verona Jazz'92, Verona, Italy, at The Next Wave Festival in Toronto, 1997 and recorded the Unheard Herbie Nichols Vol.I and Vol.II for CIMP Records. Rudd and trumpeter Lester Bowie have been featured soloists with Bacon's ensemble Multi-Jazz Dimensions. Bacon has recorded two albums of original jazz music entitled Multi-Jazz Dimensions and Winds Of Change.
    As a member of The Maelström Percussion Ensemble, Bacon, has recorded three CD's for hatArt Records including John Cage's Imaginary Landscapes, the
music of Lou Harrison and the music of James Tenney. Maelström has recently
released a self-produced CD entitled Whirled Music.
    Bacon has performed as a percussion soloist at the North American New Music Festival and Hallwalls Contemporary Art Center. He has produced a multi-media video, entitled Percussion In Space, that features solo percussion
improvisations and a compact disc of solo percussion music entitled Drumspeak.
    Bacon is a faculty member of the Tri-C Jazz Studies Program in Cleveland,
Ohio and at Fredonia State College in New York. As a member of the Tri-C
Faculty Jazz Group, Swing City, he has performed with Jon Faddis, Bobby Shew and Ken Peplowski.
    Bacon has received grants from Meet the Composer, the Arts Council in Buffalo and Erie County and the National Endowment for the Arts.
