Aesthetic Education
Aesthetic Education at the Lincoln Center Institute (LCI)
Grounded in John Dewey's aesthetic philosophy, and further articulated
by Maxine Greene, the aesthetic education program at LCI has been in
operation for over twenty five years. Despite the many issues featured
in debates about aesthetic education theory and practice, the stance
adopted at LCI has remained remarkably consistent. The early
articulation of goals and program structures, the services of
professional arts personnel, and the direction offered by stable,
long-term staffing have all helped to maintain the philosophical
orientation of the aesthetic education program at LCI. One of the
challenges LCI currently faces is to determine whether the philosophies
and practices developed remain robust enough to serve the needs of a
growing local and national constituency. To get a clearer picture of the
aspirations and development of aesthetic education at LCI, it is
instructive to map the goals and program structures as described in
forms of documentation such as past research project reports, grant
proposals and theses.
